The Democratic Republic of Pydria
Government and People
The Democratic Republic of Pydria (DRP) is an autocratic regime governed by the elite ruling class on their homeworld of Pydria. Their current sovereign, dubbed the Glorious First Citizen, has been in power for thirty-five years, ever since the death of his father and predecessor. An enormous percentage of the state's wealth and power rests in the hands of this Glorious First Citizen and his ruling council peers.
The DRP controls ten star systems. Their border is defended by a further ten deep space sentry stations, in addition to one in orbit of Pydria itself.
Unusually, however, life for the middle class (the overwhelming majority of Pydrian society) is considered fairly pleasant. The people have access to quality food and shelter. Planets have adequate infrastructure. People are permitted to travel and take holidays, and most can afford it. Culture, as expressed in literature, media, architecture, etc., is generally free and open. Press censorship is not zero but it is limited, as the ruling council does not fear for its survival.
These living conditions do not extend to the bottom tier of society, the prisoner class. Those detained by the military/police complex are sent to the planet Bar'Ehl, which is exclusively used for prison labour (mines, farms, factories, etc.) and military training. Food and housing are of shockingly poor quality, just enough for them to survive until the next shift. The most physically fit prisoners may join a special branch of the Pydrian Army and receive improved housing and food.
Journalists are not permitted anywhere near Bar'Ehl. The middle class are vaguely aware that people taken to the prison planet face harsh conditions, and anyone returning is exceedingly rare, but the general sentiment is that they wouldn't be there if they hadn't done something wrong.
Military
The Pydrian military has historically been a major focus of the Pydrian economy. The Pydrians had large fleets capable of enforcing harsh rule on their worlds. In more recent decades, this focus has shifted, and more economic resources are devoted to cultural and social development.
Nevertheless, the Pydrian Stellar Navy and Pydrian Army are military forces whose capabilities should be respected.

Species
The Pydrians are the dominant species of the DRP. Humanoid in shape (though slightly shorter on average than humans), they all have blue skin and light eyes. Most have white, yellow, or pink discolorations on their faces and hands, in patterns which do not usually align with lineage.
However, the Pydrians are not the only species of the DRP. A century earlier, DRP forces conquered the planets Nassar and Vaska and included the native sentient species from those worlds into their culture. Initially both the hermaphroditic crustacean-like Nassariq were used as labourers and the wiry, pale humanoid Vaskari as cannon fodder, but over twenty years earlier they were integrated as full citizens under DRP law.
