The Drenkul Republic

Government

The Drenkul state is, on paper at least, a federal democratic republic. There are elections held every six years and those elections are fair. Multiple political parties are permitted to run candidates. However, there is no real contender that is a good opposition to the group in power. The current President has been in office for over 20 years. This has not been out of any specific effort to prevent opposition; simply put, none has organized effectively.

Significant power is devolved to the individual systems. Regrettably, there are few checks and balances on ruling governors. In some cases there are unusual, maybe seemingly arbitrary rules. Depending on the planet, the average citizen might be concerned about accidentally violating some minor rule and needing to spend some months in a work camp. These rules vary from planet to planet. Visitors are presented with a long list of laws they must follow; ignorance is never an excuse. Colony worlds occasionally experience civil unrest, which is often put down with an iron boot.

The Drenkul Republic spans seven star systems. Additionally, it is protected by four space stations, including the one over Drenkulo itself.

Military

The Drenkul Republic Star Fleet is reasonably strong for its size and their level of advancement. The Drenkul defend their space in particular from their rimward neighbours, the Pydrians; the two have warred on and off for decades but there has been a tenuous peace for the previous 40 years.

There is universal conscription; every adult serves in the military for at least four years (usually just after they're finished their educations), after which they pursue state-chosen careers.

Economics

The Drenkul Republic uses a currency called the Daht. These are expressed in polymer notes, most of which are different shades of pink and purple. Buying power is approximately the same as a Federation credit, or of a US Dollar, British Pound Sterling, or Euro in the 2020s. Electronic banking is limited to government, military, and large-scale corporations.

Species

The Drenkul are a reptomammalian humanoid species, with sizes and builds similar to humans. Skin colour is usually some shade of blue or green. Large, bulbous heads contain a larger than normal brain, though this has not been correlated to an enhanced intellectual capacity. Telepathic members of the species are rare but not unheard of (and are usually recruited to be part of the Drenkul Republic's secret police). Their ears are pointed and slightly larger than those of a Vulcan. The only hair on their bodies are eyebrows and eyelashes.
